Kindness in unexpected places

Writing these notes gave me hope that connection is possible, even though as Heidi pointed out, we aren't usually there to witness connection or the effect it has on the person who stumbles across it.

I thought about hiding out to see what happened when someone came across one of my notes. But the most important part, for me anyway, is that I left them. Maybe someone will find a note and not need it today, but I believe when they most need it, it will resurface. When they lose their car keys or put on a jacket they haven't worn in months... those are the moments I would most like to witness.

Footnote: Thanks to Jen for constantly bringing me out of my fog, and encouraging everyone to scatter notes in their own cities. I'd love to see and read about them... if you have images or blog posts please link to them in the comments!

I did this to a friends apartment, covering the place in post-it's. She had a party a couple weeks later and apparently they were a hit, with people running from room to room and shouting out when they discovered one. She said it transformed a good party into a great party, with joy spreading through the guests... I'm hoping it overfilled and they followed the example everywhere they went.

Good for you to pass along a little kindness. It seems so needed these days.

This is such a wonderful idea. Wouldn't it be cool if we had a blog where people could post images of the notes they plant around their cities, and if we put that URL on the cards so that people who found them could go to it and maybe give their reactions etc? Kinda like a mix between Post Secret and Found magazine. Eh, that's probably overkill. It's just good knowing that this kind of stuff is going on in the world, regardless of whether we know what the outcome is or isn't. It may be that those who make and distribute these notes are more changed than those who end up finding them, and that's just fine too. Kindness is always a good idea. Thanks for sharing!

This has a "pay it forward" feel to it. Hopefully this will inspire some people...I know it has me.

@Elaine: That is so YOU. I want to throw a party where I give everyone a pad of sticky notes and ask them to wallpaper my living room. :)

@Sarah: Great idea! There's *sort of* something like that going on here -- http://urltea.com/2kj0 -- it can be photos of notes right?

Having found notes of this sort myself, I have to say it really can be a heartwarming thing. When you're really panicked, rushing around, or just in a funk and you come across a note like this, you just can't help but stop and smile for a moment.

You are a wonderful, beautiful soul. And you are now living close enough for me to roll on down and give you a hug!

I love these. I'm going to spread some love around campus.

What a lovely idea!

I put notes in my girls' lunches on the days they bring one from home. This is like lunch notes for the world!

Hey we are both Jen Lemen fans. :) I nailed happy art to trees saying things like "you can do it". So very fun. I like the note that's viewable there. I may need to steal that one for the future. :)

@Charlotte: Actually I talked to Jen this morning and she's starting a Flickr group. I may buy a domain and create a splash page that has a little explanation of how it works.

We may need help with keeping an eye on submissions, in case any spammy stuff gets in there. I'll post a link here on my blog when it's up and running.

I can't believe how this has taken off. Our email, blogs and Flickr inboxes are full.

It makes my heart full as well! <3

I'd be more than happy to monitor whatever needs monitoring. Just show me the way! (I'm not super duper internet savvy but I get around and learn fast!)

I have cut a billion pieces of paper and have jotted down in my notebook all of the things I want to write down. I am trying NOT to plan out where I will leave them as i want it to be random but I think that in a hospital parking lot would be a wonderful idea, for both the doctors AND the patients.

Keep in touch, I left my email in my "profile" and my link.

Thanks! Soooooo excited to hopefully be a part of something so amazing!

@Charlotte: Did you ever read Mama Says Om? My soulsister Elaine ran that site with me, and when we announced it was shutting down, Jen was one of the first people to contact us to ask what they could do to breathe new life in it. It seems to me like the universe has handed us something, and I promise you we will do something with it.

I love your idea of leaving notes at the hospital! Definitely a place where people could use some hope and encouragement. Not just the sick but even new mothers, new parents. Great idea.

I left some at the airport when I left NYC last week. Little reminders to not stress out and take moments to breathe. It was fun!
